A brief story of perfectionism and massive change.

You may have noticed, or maybe not, that it has been nearly one year between blog posts. Maybe, you are new to the sight and just didn’t look at the dates of the blog posts. Yes, this post is early May 2019 and the prior post was June 2018. Maybe you wondered if I had stopped blog posts altogether?

In realty, I got stuck in perfectionism. In working with my clients, I see how this affects what I provide to them and how important it is for me to take on my challenges as they take on theirs. I saw my struggle with perfectionism so much that I am pushing to the next level of taking chances being inspired by my clients as they push through their challenges, some much greater than mine.

What lead to many months of delaying blog posts was my chronic mental block of “perfectionism”. I would tell myself that I didn’t have just the perfect topic to post on. I would tell myself I didn’t have enough facts to post on a topic. It all really turns in to a bunch of excuses and delayed creation of content for others. This is not something new, I’ve known I had a “perfecting” personality type for many years as this came out in a personality type profile many years ago. The unfortunate part of a “perfecting” personality type is we will delay doing things until they are perfect which is many cases delays them from ever happening.

But this post is not really about “perfectionism” it is more a story of what I’ve been doing in the last 11 months. Perfectionism is just what got in the way of writing this post many months ago.

In early 2018 I did the work to launch this website and register the domain name of Rudius Quest so I would have that established. It was the ground work of my vision to create a coaching platform that was bigger than me. I had momentum with this until the demands of my career pulled me away. At the time I was working a full-time career and the creation of Rudius Quest was my side hustle. Then in the summer of 2018 I was inspired by the football team I was doing mindset coaching with to “Burn the Boats” when setting goals. Taken from the history of Cortez as he ordered the conquistadors to “Burn the boats” when they reach the shores of Central America to battle the Aztecs. With this order, the only option they had to return to Spain was to conquer the Aztecs and take their ships. The team took this on as their motto that summer as inspiration to really go for their goals and “Burn the boats” leaving them no other option but to go all in as a team. As a coach, I was inspired to live the motto of the season and make a decision to burn my boats one way or another. See I could have stopped the side hustle and renewed my passion for my career, or I could burn my boats and quite my career to go all in on my coaching platform.

Of course I chose the burn the career boat and left my career of 14 years and went all in on Rudius Quest. In the fall of 2018, I founded Rudius Quest LLC and left my career for a life of a solopreneur. This of course was a major risk, took the commitment of a loving family and the entire retirement account I had thus far in life accumulated.

It was all worth it.

It has been as challenging as I had thought, I welcome every challenge as it has given me a renewed passion for life. I’m doing something that I truly feel makes a difference in the world and leaves me feeling fulfilled. It also creates many opportunities to succumb to doubt and fear. But having burned the boats, it is much easier to look fear in the face and take chances.

My intent for this post is simply to share with my audience what got me hear and the commitment it took to take this leap. Share with you the fact that perfectionism will delay your beautiful future if you let it. Perfectionism will leave your story untold and maybe even affect other people as your story is what they need to hear.

I’m here to show you that taking your life on is not going to be easy, but it is your life and only you can create the beautiful story that is within you.
